We set out to find the best place to find cheap blackjack in Las Vegas for $5.00. After arriving in Vegas one Saturday evening in January and filling our bellies with the Rio Buffet, we set out on our mission. We searched high and low and some places we cannot mention.

Let me mention that I am luckier gambler during the daytime hours. At night I am good on quick in and out games.

Alas, we never did play the $5 tables at the Rio Hotel, for many reasons. Most of the higher end casinos or Mega Resorts are about the same as the Rio, some casinos are bigger than others and have the crowd to fill in any open slots at the table. These include: The Luxor, Mandalay Bay, Wynn, Venetian, Paris, Bellagio, Monte Carlo, Mirage and the MGM Grand. The other Casinos that had their fair amount of $5 and sometimes $2 and $3 Blackjack tables include: Excalibur (we had a long session here this trip), Stratosphere, Sahara, Riviera, Circus Circus, Casino Royale, Imperial Palace and Slots-A-Fun. Harrahs, Ballys and the Flamingo had a decent showing.

I believe we all came out ahead except DV8R who Harvey after stopping all play at the table made him go buy a basic Blackjack strategy card before he would let him play again at his table. It is times like these you will remember a lifetime.

Ellis Island, before you say anything, we know it is not on the strip but only one street behind Bally’s. They had single deck $5 Blackjack and pretty entertaining dealers. I put a $100 on the table and almost immediately I was comped with free full size drinks from the bar, not bad and I was not going to play the full $100, we were passing time before dinner. The pit boss was courteous and not intimidating the dealer we had was an good guy and was easy to get along with. I cannot remember his name, but he is around 6′ and skinny with black hair. They brew their own beer their, which we did not sample, so making Root Beer would come naturally and it was inexpensive too. Ellis Island is a locals place and it is a locals hangout. The dealers and workers know everyone’s names. Be prepared the bathrooms are not spectacular. I will have a separate article about Ellis Island later.

Most often during the latter part of Sunday and through Thursday afternoon you are more likely to find the ever elusive $5 Blackjack table. Something to remember about Blackjack in Vegas, stay away from any table that has an auto shuffler. It is a big black box that sits next to the dealer and it counts cards! It knows when the table is leaning towards being favorable for the player and then reshuffles. Never sit at one of these tables unless you have money to burn.

A word to the wise always set your daily limits of spending that way you can have enough money to get back to the hotel room to lick your wounds. I would suggest putting the bulk of your money into the hotel safe in you room and only take a little bit above your limit with you, in case you get a little crazy or you accidentally lose your money.

Many veterans of Las Vegas will be scoffing at this article, saying you should know better and that there are no great places to play Blackjack for $5 on the Vegas Strip, which in turn they are mostly right. But, if you know where to go and do not mind the crowds or sometimes smoke, you can find that needle in the haystack.

Let me just remind everyone a cold weekday in January, there are not a lot of people in Vegas, so if you are looking for some action, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday are not your nights. The casinos are somewhat busy but the strip could be closed off for a drag race, but this could be a whole other article.

Blackjack Brawl was the first and only major live television supercard event produced by Herb Abrams' Universal Wrestling Federation (UWF). The event took place on September 23, 1994 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada and aired live on SportsChannel America.^[1] The event was a successor to UWF's only pay-per-view event, Beach Brawl.

Eleven professional wrestling matches were contested on the card. The main event was a singles match for the World Heavyweight Championship, with champion Steve Williams defending the title against Sid Vicious. Nine of the matches at the event were championship matches, as several new championships were introduced at the event. New champions crowned included the Americas Championship, the Junior Heavyweight Championship, the Midget World Championship, the MGM Grand Championship and the World Tag Team Championship. The vacant SportsChannel Television Championship and the vacant Women's World Championship were also decided at the event. The two non-title matches at the event were a lumberjack match between Cactus Jack and Jimmy Snuka and a singles match between Samson and The Irish Assassin.

Despite implications during the broadcast that a follow-up event would happen, Blackjack Brawl would stand as the last event produced by UWF.^[2]

Preliminary matches[edit]

The opening match of the event featured Johnny Ace taking on Dan Spivey for the inaugural Americas Championship. Near the end of the match, Spivey applied a long abdominal stretch on Ace until Ace's valet Missy Hyatt turned on Ace by throwing in the towel for him, thus costing him the match.

Mando Guerrero took on Jack Armstrong to crown the inaugural Junior Heavyweight Champion. Near the end of the match, Guerrero missed a moonsault from the top rope, allowing Armstrong to hit a series of elbow drops for the win.

Sunny Beach took on Dr. Feelgood for the vacant SportsChannel Television Championship. Near the end of the match, Feelgood pulled a rag out of his medical bag with black ink poured on it and then tried to shove the rag into Beach, but Beach countered by shoving the rag into Feelgood's face and pinning him to win the SportsChannel Television Championship. Hyatt slapped Beach after the match, allowing Feelgood to attack him with the rag from behind.

Bob Orton, Jr., defended the Southern States Championship against Finland Hellraiser Thor. Near the end of the match, Orton tried to hit a powerbomb, but Thor backdropped him out of the ring. Orton then threw water in Thor's face and dragged him out of the ring. Orton hit Thor with the championship belt and the match ended in a double disqualification. As a result, Orton retained the title. The two continued to brawl after the match until Herb Abrams handed Thor a chair to hit Orton. However, Orton countered forcing Thor to retreat.

Little Tokyo took on The Karate Kid for the inaugural Midget World Championship. Near the end of the match, Karate Kid reversed an Irish whip attempt to whip Tokyo into the corner and charged at him but Tokyo hit a double throat thrust for the win.

Samson took on The Irish Assassin. Samson hit a vertical suplex followed by a bridging German suplex for the pin.

Tyler Mane took on Steve Ray for the inaugural MGM Grand Championship. Ray tried to perform a sunset flip on Mane, but Mane countered that with a seated senton and grabbed the top rope for leverage, thus pinning Ray to win the match.

Tina Moretti took on Candi Devine for the vacant Women's World Championship. Devine hit a big scoop slam to Moretti for the win.

Masked Confusion (B. Brian Blair and Jim Brunzell) took on The New Powers of Pain (Warlord and Power Warrior) for the inaugural World Tag Team Championship. Near the end of the match, Power Warrior switched places with his brother David Power but Blair ended up pinning him.

The penultimate match of the event was a lumberjack match between Cactus Jack and Jimmy Snuka. The action spilled to the outside where the two brawled, resulting in a count out. The fighting continued and reached the audience where Snuka suplexed Jack into a row of seats.

Main event match[edit]

In the main event, Steve Williams defended the UWF World Heavyweight Championship against Sid Vicious. Williams hit a Doctor Bomb to Vicious and covered him for the pinfall but Dan Spivey attacked him, causing Vicious to be disqualified. As a result, Williams retained the title.

Reception[edit]

Blackjack Brawl largely received negative reviews from critics. Arnold Furious of 411Mania rated the event 3 out of 10, considering the event to be 'The usual horseshit from UWF' noting that there were 'Stupid stipulations, bad booking, nothing matches and titles that don’t mean anything.' However, he also noticed some worthwhile moments, stating 'The midget match is pretty good and its weird seeing Sid actually wrestling for a while in the main event.'^[3]
